Pet Portrait: Grey the Border Collie

Grey is the first of 3 commissions from one person, so I'm going to go ahead and assume that he lives with the two cats I'll be posting in the next day or two. And if I know anything about how energetic Border Collies can be, and how obnoxious one of my beagles is with our cat, then I can only imagine the circus going on in this house. Then again, Border Collies are super intelligent, so maybe he's smart enough to read the room. After all, look at that face. It doesn't scream mischievous.

Original Photo: I lightened up the original photo since Grey was sitting in shadow.

Paper Used: 400 Series Flannel White Strathmore Artist Paper cut to 8×10″

Prismacolor Colored Pencils Used: I actually used my warm grey pencils for once. This NEVER happens. Now I can go back to neglecting them for a couple more years.

Progress Pics: Now that I'm recording my drawing process, my mind is juggling reminders to start and stop my timer on my current iPhone, start and stop the timelapse video recorder on my old iPhone, and take progress pics as I go. It's a miracle that I remembered to take these four, honestly, though I am bummed the last two aren't as fun as the first two...

Timelapse Video: At 4x speed

Time Spent: 14 hours and 21 minute. I don't know if recording this drawing to make a timelapse video kept me more on task, but usually a drawing like this would take me at least 2-3 more hours.

Up Next: As mentioned above, I have the two cat portraits to post soon as well. Then I'll have to decide on drawing a random dog breed to add to my portfolio, such as a Dalmatian, or try out my newer version of Corel Painter with some digital portraits of St. Louis Cardinal players.

Until next time! Lauren H.
